GUNDERLOCH NACKENHEIM ROTHENBERG RIESLING AUSLESE 2006
This is a single vineyard wine from the steepest slopes of the Nackenheim Rothenberg vineyard. This Auslese wine has used berries that have been affected by
botrytis cinerea
, which concentrates the sugar in the grapes and makes a wine with great complexity, distinctive flavour, reminicient of tropical fruits, all combined with sweetness, acidity and a fine minerality.
VINEYARD
This wine is from the Rheinhessen, which is a region with an enormous potential for quality.
The micro climate that develops through the influence of the Rhine river, mild days until late into harvest time followed by cool nights setting in already early during the season- all these constitute conditions that are ideal for great Riesling. The growing region can be divided into three different areas: the Wonnegau in the south and Bingen in the north, the best vineyard sites though are undoubtedly the slopes bordering the Rhine between Oppenheim, Nierstein and Nackenheim.
The steep slopes of the Rothenberg drop towards the Rhine and face south-easterly. The vineyards get sun for the most part of the day and the huge water surface of the stream functions as a radiator that spends warmth to its surroundings. The mineral composition of the red soil in the Rothenberg is unique. It consists of iron rich clay-slate (the red colour of the stone is due to oxidation). The clay-slate soil warms up quickly and stores sufficient warmth even until late harvest, offering the grapes a high degree of ripeness. The wines that develop show for their relatively low degree of alcohol a distinctive aroma, high content of extract and a well structured body. The 30 to 35 year old Riesling vines have roots that grow 50 meters deep into the rock.
