GUILDALBERTO TENUTA SAN GUIDO 2008 GUILDALBERTO TENUTA SAN GUIDO 2008

Guidalberto, the second wine of Sassicaia, continues to grow in stature and quality from year to year. A significant amount of declassified Cabernet Sauvignon from Sassicaia is used in the blend and the Merlot, which gives softness and accessablity, is also grown on the estate. The 2008 vintage has produced richly flavoured wines with great structure and Guidalberto shows real concentration and depth. 90 Points from Robert Parker

VINEYARD
The Tenuta San Guido estate lies 5 miles inland from south-western Tuscany's Mediterranean coast. It extends across 5,000 acres, of which 148 are under vine.

The first vineyard was planted on the estate in the early 1940s (with some French grafts of Cabernet Sauvignon purchased from Château Lafite) near Castiglioncello, the Incisa Della Rochetta fortress which dominates the local landscape. The site was selected because of its perfect microclimate and the shelter from the sea breezes provided by the castle. The vineyard carries the name of the castle, and as each subsequent vineyard has been planted, it has been named after a nearby farmhouse or landmark.

Eighty per cent of the vineyards enjoy a south-westerly exposure, and are planted at an altitude of between 250-300 feet above sea level; with the remainder further into the hills at an altitude of between 500-600 feet, seven miles inland.

GRAPE VARIETIES
45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 10% Sangiovese

VINIFICATION
Harvesting is all done by hand and with a low yield, of 5-6 tonnes of grapes per hectare, to ensure that each vine produces fruit rich in sugar, tannins, and potential extract.

Vinification takes place in stainless steel vats with maceration normally lasting for 15 for the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and 11 days for the Sangiovese. Small French and American oak barriques are used to age the wine for 12 months. The wine is then aged in bottle, in the Tenuta San Guido cellars, for 3 months before being released for sale.

TASTING NOTE
The Guidalberto 2008 is a deep, vibrant purple and the aromas are full and ripe with intense, dark cherry and plum fruits and notes of spice. Wonderfully structured and balanced on the palate with flavours of wild berries and herbs. Maturation in oak barrels for twelve months gives a spicy complexity on the finish.

Although this wine is very approachable at the moment, it will certainly improve over the next five years developing in complexity.
