GOATS DO ROAM IN VILLAGES RED 2006
GDR in Vlillages is a distinct step up from the "standard" GDR. This wine shows more structure and is predominantly Shiraz, with a bit of Pinotage - an innovative blend!
VINEYARD
Most of the fruit for Goats do Roam in Villages is sourced from a 300ha farm on the south-west-facing slopes of Paarl Mountain. This is a granite rock outcrop in the heart of the Paarl wine district, viticulturally among the most historic and influential areas of the Cape winelands. Table Mountain can be seen from the winery at the southen tip of the African continent. The rest of the fruit comes from sites in Paarl, Stellenbosch and Piekenierskloof.
GRAPE VARIETIES
74% Shiraz
26% Pinotage
VINIFICATION
The Shiraz and Pinotage components were co-fermented and then aged in a mixture of French and American oak of which 10% was new and the rest two and four years old. The wine remained in oak for 12 months.
TASTING NOTE
An innovative blend of rich, spicy Shiraz and Pinotage, the 2005 vintage is still very young, with the fruit characters to the fore. Dark and spicy on the nose, with delicious ripe fruit on the palate - the Shiraz adds spice and the Pinotage a cool elegance.
