GLENGIUN STONYBROKE SHIRAZ 2003
This wine comes from Glenguin Estate and is made by Robin Tedder MW. It hails from the Hunter Valley and contains a small amount of Tannat to add structure to the riper, fleshier Shiraz. It displays aromas of spice and pepper, along with a lovely palate of black fruits and spice and some fine, dusty tannins on the finish.
VINEYARD
This wine comes from the Hunter Valley in New South Wales, Australia; about 2 Hours North of Sydney. This provides a generally warm climate for the 12 year old vines to thrive on the NE facing slopes of sandstone and ironstone on clay. The vines are spur pruned with vertical shoot positioning and fruit thinning is practiced. The grapes are hand harvested and yeild around 2 tonnes per acre.
GRAPE VARIETIES
95% Shiraz
5% Tannat
VINIFICATION
The must is fermented in open fermenters, with very little pre-fermentation maceration. The wine undergoes full malolactic and is then aged in medium toast American and French oak for 15 months before being bottled and allowed to rest for a further 9 months before release.
TASTING NOTE
This wine has a medium garnet appearance, with very well defined "legs", indicating the 14% alcohol level. It has well defined savoury aromas and spicy fruit character of black cherry, blackberry and menthol supported by layers of fine dusty tannins. The small amount of Tannat clearly brings some structure to the fleshier Shiraz.
