GLENGUIN SCHOOLHOUSE BLOCK SHIRAZ 2002
Another wine from Glenguin Estate, made by Robin Tedder MW. It takes Hunter Valley Shiraz to the next level and it is so unusal today to find an Australian wine showing some signs of bottle age. 5 years maturation in bottle gives this wine a complex and well developed character of black fruits, plums, leather and a slight gamey meatiness - lovely!
VINEYARD
This wine comes from the Hunter Valley in New South Wales, Australia; about 2 Hours North of Sydney. This provides a generally warm climate for the 12 year old vines to thrive on the NE facing slopes of sandstone and ironstone on clay. The vines are spur pruned with vertical shoot positioning and fruit thinning is practiced. The grapes are hand harvested and yield around 2 tonnes per acre.
GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Shiraz
VINIFICATION
The wines was fermented in open top fermenters before maturation in French oak for 15 months. One-third of the barrels were new.
TASTING NOTE
Fruits of the forest, blackberry and plum aromas; the palate is deep and rich with leather, chocolate and smoke seasoning the black fruit characters. This wine is showing real signs of development and provides a great insight into how complex a Hunter Valley Shiraz can be.
