This Frog's Leap Merlot is made very much in an elegant style. It's not an opulent, hedonistic wine, but one of great structure and balance, which shows what Californian wine can be if it's made carefully and without too much focus on the opinions of the American wine critics! VINEYARD The Winery sits surrounded by 40 acres of organically farmed estate vineyard. Frog's Leap also owns 88 acres and farms 100 additional acres in the Rutherford appellation. All vineyards are organically and dry farmed. The grapes are picked at a level of "natural" ripeness to ensure the "terrior" shines through. GRAPE VARIETIES 100% Merlot VINIFICATION The grapes are de-stemmered and crushed before being fermented in the "famous" Frog's Leap square fermentation tanks using natural yeast. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 18 months in French and American oak barrels before being bottled unfiltered. TASTING NOTE The Frog's Leap Merlot 2007 opens with fresh cherry and currant aromas which are underscored with subtle notes of chocolate. Ripe flavors of cherry, cassis and plum are laced with hints of dried herbs and cigar box. The wine’s connection to its Rutherford appellation is reflected in the understated essence of earth and dust. Generous and plump, this wine’s lush texture is balanced with a delicate acidity that promises a long, memorable finish. Perfect with your favorite steak or roast duck.
