CABERNET/ SYRAH TOSCANA IGT 2005 FORTEDIGA CABERNET/ SYRAH TOSCANA IGT 2005 FORTEDIGA

This wine, from a relatively new vineyard in Tuscany, is an excellent example of the quality of modern winemaking in Italy. Offering rich red fruits and a complex and balancing spiciness, this would be a great partner to all types of Italian cuisine. This wine was granted a Seal of Approval at the 2006 International Wine Challenge.

VINEYARD
The Fortediga vineyards are situated north of Grossetto close to the village of Ribolla. This part of the Maremma, with its iron rich soils, has tremendous potential for red wines. The vineyard was planted in 2000 under the watchful eye of Alberto Antonini, who is one of the owners.

The Surface area is 50 Ha and is located 100/120 m above sea level. The exposure is South-South/West. The soil is composed of clay, limestone with good depth. The vines are cordon-trained and planted at a density of 7050 per hectare, something that gives low yields per vine. The average age of the vineyard is 4 years old. The grapes were hand-picked between the end of September and the first 10 days of October.

GRAPE VARIETIES
40% Syrah, 30% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon

VINIFICATION
The wine was fermented at 28°C in stainless steel for 7/8 days, and spent about 2 weeks on the skins. The wine aged 5 months in 50% stainless steel and 50% barriques. The wine was bottled on April 2006.

TASTING NOTE
This wine offers a deep ruby red colour with intense aromas of red berry and plums followed by a hint of spice. A well structured, smooth and complex palate of red fruits and plums complete with a long and complex finish.
