FINCA LOS PRIMOS SYRAH 2006
Made by top Argentinean winery Valentin Bianchi, this wine is targetting the Aussie market and is an excellent option, showing good colour, impressive syrah (shiraz) fruit and spice and a very good balance. Move away from Jacob's Creek and try something different!
VINEYARD
The grapes for this single-vineyard wine come from Rama Caida, San Rafael, Mendoza, around 760 meters above sea level. One of the coolest areas in San Rafael, the soil in Rama Caida is of sandy calcareous composition and alluvial origins.
GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Syrah
VINIFICATION
The grapes were hand-harvested and sorted twice (once before de-stemming and once after). Prior to maceration, 10%-20% of the juice was bled off the skins to increase skin to juice ratio. After crushing, fermentation took place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. Part of the wine was aged in briefly in French and American oak but this was kept to a minimum so that the fresh, fruity character of the wine was not overwhelmed. Before release, the wine was aged for one month in bottle.
TASTING NOTE
Still fresh, with perfumes of juicy blackberries and dark cherries, the emphasis is on keeping the fruit to the fore in this wine, while providing a relatively firm structure which is true to the grape variety. Nicely balanced, with spicy notes of vanillin from the oak treatment, it has a long, cherryish finish.
