VIÑA FALERNIA SYRAH 2005 VIÑA FALERNIA SYRAH 2005

Another great value wine from Viña Falernia in the Elqui Valley in Chile. Offering red fruit and a lovely spice and meaty aroma, this is a full bodied wine that would accompany well aged meat and smoked meats.

VINEYARD
Viña Falernia is located in the Elqui Valley between La Serena and Vicuña, 520 km to the north of Santiago and it is at present Chile's northernmost wine estate. Viña Falernia comprises around 320 hectares of vineyard (800 acres), plus 100 hectares (250 acres) with long term contracts.
The fact that there is no risk of phylloxera infestation means that vines need not be grafted onto American rootstocks, as is necessary in most others parts of the world. The trellising system is Guyot or double Guyot, whereby the two lateral shoots are pruned to leave 6-8 buds each. Vines are planted at a distance of one metre, with two metres between the rows, giving a density of 5000 vines per hectare.

GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Syrah

VINIFICATION
The grapes were hand-picked; after de-stemming and crushing and cold maceration for 72 hours at 10º C, fermentation took place on the skins in stainless steel tanks with pistons at 26-28º C, breaking the cap 4-6 times a day for the first week, only with the pistons action. After the malolactic fermentation the 50% of wine was matured in French and American new oak barrels for 5 months.

TASTING NOTE
Bright and deep in colour. Red fruit, black pepper, meat and spicy aromas. On the palate it is a full bodied with a meat and gently smoked leather aroma.
