VIÑA FALERNIA CARMENÈRE/ SYRAH 2005
This wine offers very attractive red fruits, black pepper and chocolate flavours on the palate along with lovely soft, ripe tannins. Great with red meat and robust foods, this wine offers great value for money and something a bit different.
VINEYARD
Viña Falernia is located in the Elqui Valley between La Serena and Vicuña, 520 km to the north of Santiago and it is at present Chile's northernmost wine estate. Viña Falernia comprises around 320 hectares of vineyard (800 acres), plus 100 hectares (250 acres) with long term contracts.
The fact that there is no risk of phylloxera infestation means that vines need not be grafted onto American rootstocks, as is necessary in most others parts of the world. The trellising system is Guyot or double Guyot, whereby the two lateral shoots are pruned to leave 6-8 buds each. Vines are planted at a distance of one metre, with two metres between the rows, giving a density of 5000 vines per hectare.
GRAPE VARIETIES
60% Carmenère, 40% Syrah
VINIFICATION
Grapes from different vineyards of the Elqui Valley were hand picked, de-stemmed and crushed separately . The grapes were hand-picked, de-stemmed and crushed. Fermentation in stainless steel tanks at 26-28º C with enzymes for the colour extraction and selected yeasts. 100% malolactic fermentation. Aging 70% in stainless steel tanks; 30% in new French and American oak barrels for 4 months. The wines was blended just 3 months before being clarified, gently filtered and bottled.
TASTING NOTE
Bright and deep colour. The wine shows a good fruit concentration and on the nose black pepper, red fruit, dark chocolate. Great body with soft tannins on the palate.
