FAIRVIEW MOURVÈDRE 2004 FAIRVIEW MOURVÈDRE 2004

Fairview, run by Charles Back, is producing some very attractive wines at the moment. This Mourvèdre is a lovely, warming and earthy wine showing the variety at is best, with black fruit flavours and a structured backbone of tannins.

VINEYARD
Fairview is situated on the lower slopes of Mt. Paarl, which is more sheltered from the moderating maritime influence than nearby Stellenbosch.
The fruit was harvested on March 2004 from dryland vineyards in the warm Swartland region. Soils are mainly deep shale, producing ripe grape which in turn give concentrated, long lived wines.

GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Mourvèdre

VINIFICATION
The fruit was hand harvested, lightly crushed and destalked, then fermented in stainless steel tanks. The wine was then pressed and transferred to barrel for malolactic fermentation. After malolactic it was racked and aged in barrique (second and third fill American oak barrels) for 9 months.

TASTING NOTE
Deep crimson red in colour, the 2004 Mourvèdre is showing some maturity, with warm, earthy-spice aromas. It has lovely, ripe berry fruit on the palate, balanced by firm, spicy backbone of tannin and a long, warm finish.
