FAIRVIEW PINOTAGE 2008
Pinotage is a classic South African grape - a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault, it produces a wine deep in colour and flavour, which a distinctly rich and warming palate. This is a well made and very drinkable Pinotage, avoiding the deviant flavours sometimes associated with this grape.
VINEYARD
Pinotage is a classic South African variety and originates from a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault (known as Hermitage in South Africa) in 1925.
The Fairview Pinotage was primarily harvested from bush vines in Malmesbury and Agter-Paarl, some of which are over 25 years old. These older vineyards are dry farmed and the vines grow on deep soils. This is supplemented by fruit from an irrigated, younger, trellised vineyard at Fairview.
GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Pinotage
VINIFICATION
The grapes were picked over a number of days during the first and second week of February. The bunches were destalked, and lightly pumped through the crusher with the rollers full open.
After yeast and malolactic fermentation was completed in stainless steel tanks, the wine was aged in used French and American oak for 10 months. A portion of the blend was unoaked and blended prior to bottling to maintain the fresh fruit character of the wine and make the oak character more subtle.
TASTING NOTE
Deep inky in colour, with bold aromas of mocha and caramel, followed by ripe plums and blackberries on the nose. On the palate, it is medium to full bodied, with lovely richness and sweet fruit on the finish. Tannins give good structure and oak is subtle, so it does not to dominate the fruit.
