This is a powerful, Syrah and Carignan dominated wine with surprising balance and finesse for such a rich and heady blend. VINEYARD The domaine is based in the village of Estargel, surrounded by barren rocky landscapes, the beautiful white capped Pyrenees to the south and the Mediterranean due east. The soils are marl and shale on shallow, south facing slopes, given perfect ripening conditions for the grapes. All the vines are a minimum of 40 years old. GRAPE VARIETIES 40% Syrah, 30% Carignan, 20% Lladoner Pelut, 10% Grenache VINIFICATION The grapes are manually harvested and then vinified seperately. All the grapes are destemmed and then the Syrah undergoes traditional maceration for 21 days. The Grenache and Lladoner Pelut are macerated for 15 days and the Carignan for 14 days. After malolactic fermentation the wines are racked and the aged in cement tanks until bottling. TASTING NOTE The typical Southern French varieities dominate in this wine with its intense almost heady aromatics, with notes of prune, dried fruit, black cherry and undergrowth to the fore. The palate is unsurprisingly rich; powerful and peppery this wine will be the perfect match for venison, wild boar or hearty casseroles.
