DOMAINE LEFLAIVE BOURGOGNE BLANC 2006
OK this is a "simple" Bourgogne Blanc wine. Ermm, no it isn't as it comes from one of the finest Domaines in Burgundy. Domaine Leflaive is truly one of the superstars of Burgundy and this wine is comparable to most other's Premier Crus. Rich, round and bold, this is an amazing wine.
VINEYARD
The grapes are sourced from 2 parcels of vines, although just behind the winery in Pulingy-Montrachet, they are not entitled to the village appellation.
"Les Houlières"
(4.23 acres) planted in 1979 and 1982, and
"Les Parties"
(3.78 acres) planted in 1998, 1999 and 2003.
The vineyards are tended using biodynamic principles.
The grapes are harvested manually when each parcel is deemed to be ready. The grapes are picked into small baskets and taken to the winery where they are transferred into a series of 'vibrating bins'. These allow them to be passed on to the sorting table without any crushing or other damage, and here they are meticulously sorted by a highly experienced team of 8 who remove every grape that is not in absolutely perfect condition.
GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Chardonnay
VINIFICATION
The fruit is pressed and the juice transferred to the winery. The juice spends 12 hours at 7°C in stainless steel tanks to allow the 'gross lees' to settle, and is then decanted into barrels on its 'fine lees' where the natural yeasts allow the alcoholic fermentation to begin.
Alcoholic fermentation takes place in oak casks, 12% new (maxi 1/3 Vosges, mini 2/3 Allier).
The lees are stirred from late in the alcoholic fermentation, between once and three times a week, until the malolactic fermentation begins. After malolactic, the wines are racked into tank, the individual cuvées are blended, and the wine is returned to barrel to complete its twelve months in wood. It is then transferred to stainless steel to settle prior to bottling with gentle fining and very light filtering if necessary.
TASTING NOTE
The Domaine Leflaive Bourgogne Blanc 2007 has a rich, complex and toasty nose with a palate that is rich with deep, complex, herb and toast flavours and very ripe exotic fruit. The finish is long and delicious. This is a very bold, rich and complex Charodnnay that belies is regional status.
