DOMAINE J-F MUGNIER NUITS-SAINT-GEORGES CLOS DES FOURCHES 2006 DOMAINE J-F MUGNIER NUITS-SAINT-GEORGES CLOS DES FOURCHES 2006

Frédéric Mugnier produces very finely crafted and delicate wines from his Domaine in Chambolle-Musingy. The Clos des Fourches is essentially the fruit from the premier cru vineyard Clos de la Maréchale, but from younger vines than are used for the single vineyard wines. An excellent introduction into top class Burgundy from a great producer.

VINEYARD
Do not try to find the Clos des Fourches on your maps of Burgundy because it is not there. This name disappeared from the maps at the end of the 19th century when the Clos became known as 'Clos de la Maréchale'. This wine is a cuvée made from the younger vines of the Clos de la Maréchale in certain vintages.

In the olden days, the word 'fourches' referred to the gallows from which criminals were hanged.

The Clos de la Maréchale has a surface of 9 hectares, 76 acres. It is the largest monopole (an appellation belonging to a single owner) in the Côte d'Or. The average age of the vines in 2009 is
about 45 years old.

Mugnier has ploughed his own path when it comes to vineyard management; never one to follow fashion, whether it be organic, biodynamic or even lutte raisonée. Fertilizer was last used in 1986, herbicides in 1990 and insecticides in 1995

Within the vines a single cane Guyot training is used.

GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Pinot Noir

VINIFICATION
Triage is done in the vine rather than in the winery.

The wines are fermented in temperature controlled large wooden fermenters, which are up to 100 years old. During fermentation the cap is punched down rather than pumped over.

The wine is then aged up to 20% new oak.

TASTING NOTE
This wine has a nose of dark berry fruit, violet, earth and a slight whiff of the "countryside".The palate is very pure with rich and textured fruit and firm and dusty tannin. This is a very balanced wine.
