DOMAINE ARNOUX-LACHAUX BOURGOGNE PINOT FIN 2007
I admit it. Red Burgundy is one of my favourites and I have long been a fan of the wines of Domaine Robert Arnoux since first visiting there in the early 1990s. Pascal Lachaux, the late Arnoux's son-in-law, is a hugely talented wine maker and vitculturist who makes wine with care and precision. This is a deliciously, textural, plush and pure Pinot Noir that reaches greater heights than many Village level wines.
VINEYARD
Pinot Fin in an ancient clone of Pinot Noir that is believed to have been the original clone (or at least one of the earliest).
The grapes are sourced from three vineyards: the famous
Bon Batons
site outside of Chambolle, another outside of Vosne and yet another on the edge of Nuits. All three sites are planted to Pinot Fin vines with average age exceeding 50 years.
Little wonder the quality is so high.
GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Pinot Noir (Pinot Fin clone)
VINIFICATION
Once the fruit leaves the vineyard it is 100% destemmed followed by a prefermentation maceration and a vinification of 15-22 days.
Only natural yeasts are used, and the wines are aged for around 16 months in French oak - about 30% for this wine and sometimes a small proportion in the larger 600 litre
'demi-muids'
.
TASTING NOTE
A beautiful scent of freshly crushed red fruits almost immediately springs from the glass. On the palate there an exciting freshness of bright fruit, almost with the texture of a rich, summer fruit pudding. The tannins are delightfully soft and this is already drinking well.
