CULLEN MARGARET RIVER MANGAN 2005
An unusual blend, but one which makes a beautiful black fruit and spice wine, with an underlying perfume and complexity. Well balanced being rich but fresh this is a well structured and interesting wine.
VINEYARD
The soils at Cullen are old, granite and gravely sandy loam, overlaying lateric subsoils. Malbec, Petit Verdot and Merlot are hree varieties that are particularly well suited to growing in this area. In the Mangan wine, the Malbec provides the fruit power and colour, the Petit Verdot the length and texture and the Merlot the structure.
GRAPE VARIETIES
36% Malbec, 32% Merlot, 32% Petit Verdot
VINIFICATION
Conditions in the lead up and during vintage 2005 were ideal, with no excessive periods of high temperature. The quality of the grapes was exceptional and the resulting wines rank with those of the great vintage of 2001
The grapes for this wine were hand harvested and vinified with the emphasis on accentuating the fruit character of the grapes. The wine was matured in French oak for five months.
TASTING NOTE
Intense deep red in colour, with an opulent perfume of blackberries, nutmeg, aniseed and violets. On the palate, the wine is both rich and fresh, with mulberry and blackberry flavours balanced by the soft, ripe tannins.
