CULLEN, 'KEVIN JOHN' MARGARET RIVER CHARDONNAY 2005

This is a truly top quality Australian Chardonnay. Barrel fermented with wild yeast this wine shows great purity of fruit, complexity and elegance so rarely found in Australian wines today. This is a world class wine and more than justifies its price.

VINEYARD
The soils at Cullen are old, granite and gravely sandy loam, overlaying lateric subsoils. The Chardonnay vineyard comprises 7.43 hectares and was planted in 1976.

Biodynamic techniques were used to produce the Chardonnay fruit, which ensures that the wine naturally reflects the vineyard characteristics.

GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Chardonnay

VINIFICATION
70% of the wine was fermented using wild yeasts. This component was matured for just five months in new French oak to ensure that, while oak still had an influence, it remained in the background.
30% of the wine was prevented from undergoing malolactic fermentation, which facilitates the retention of both freshness and natural acidity.

TASTING NOTE
Bright, youthful green gold in colour, with a clean, fresh nose, with perfumes of tropical fruit, nougat and lemony, citrus notes. On the palate, it is intense and restrained, with well-integrated spicy, vanillin notes from the oak, a lemony character which carries through from the nose and a long, elegant finish.
