CLONAKILLA HILLTOPS SHIRAZ 2006 CLONAKILLA HILLTOPS SHIRAZ 2006

Clonakilla is recognised as one of Australia's leading estates and this wine is simply a "straight" Shiraz from a lower lying area than the Shiraz/ Viognier but for the price, it gives the more expensive wine a pretty good run for its money - not cheap, but great value.

VINEYARD
The fruit for this wine was picked in mid to late march, selected from three vineyards around the town of Young in New South Wales in the Hilltops district, the Canberra District's closest neighbouring wine region. The altitude is marginally lower than Canberra so the grapes tend to come in around two weeks before those grown on the estate. Soils are deep red loams over light clay, giving distinctive black berry and blackcurrant notes to the wine, reminiscent more of the Northern Rhone than the Barossa Valley.

GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Shiraz

VINIFICATION
The grapes were destemmed but not crushed, retaining a proportion of whole berries. The wine started the fermentation process in open fermenters and finished it in barrel. French oak was used for ageing with a small percentage of new wood. The wine was racked once during its twelve month maturation in oak.

TASTING NOTE
Deep, black-red in colour, with perfumes of dark cherry, aniseed and blackcurrant on the nose, giving way to good structure on the palate, ripe, silky tannins and a broad, spiced, savoury fruit character. it is spicy and rich to the finish.
