CHÂTEAU DE NAGES BLANC 2008
Château de Nages is one of the leading properties in the Costières de Nîmes. The vineyards are farmed organically by the wine maker Michel Gassier and he pays fantastic attention to detail at every turn. The result is wines that seamlessly combine the warmth and spice of the Southern Rhone and the power of the Languedoc.
VINEYARD
The Costières de Nîmes is found between the low rocky hills and
garrigue
that mark the border of the Languedoc with the Provence, and the low sandy plain of the Camargue the Rhône delta, the soil is mostly a mixture of round pebbles (
"galets"
) similar to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and sandy alluvial deposit and red shale.
The soil depth from 3 to 15 metres is largely responsible for the variations of style within this AOC.
The climate is Mediterranean, similar to that of the Rhône valley, but is characterised by its proximity to the coast and the sea breezes.
GRAPE VARIETIES
60% Grenache Blanc, 40% Roussanne
VINIFICATION
The grapes were harvested at the cusp of maturity in order to preserve acidity, before undergoing skin contact for about 8 hours at cold temperature to boost the aromatics.
The grapes were then gently pressed in a pneumatic press before being fermented at 14 - 16 °C for about 21 days and then aged on fine lees with
remontage
for 8 weeks.
The wine was fined and filtered before bottling.
TASTING NOTES
The wine has a pale yellow colour and a very expressive nose, with aromas of white flowers, citrus fruits and mineral overtones. The palate is lively, fresh and aromatic with a long subtle & fresh finish.
