CHÂTEAU DE BEAUCASTEL ROUSSANNE VIEILLES VIGNES 2009 CHÂTEAU DE BEAUCASTEL ROUSSANNE VIEILLES VIGNES 2009

This is the pinnacle of Beaucastel's white wines and is made from very old Rousanne vines on the estate. Blanc is nearly as famous as it red sibling and rightly so. It is a wine of exceptional complexity and balance and really shows that greatness can be achieved with white wines in the Southern Rhône.

Also available in-bond. Contact us for details and prices.

VINEYARD
The white wines of Château de Beaucastel are amongst the finest expressions of Roussanne grapes grown in a warm climate. The Château de Beaucastel white "Vieilles Vignes" (old vines) is 3 hectares / 7 acres in size. In this case the old vines are at least 75 years old.

The vineyard site is a seven hectare site close to the Château itself. Yields are kept extremely low and then great care is taken in the vineyard to ensure healthy, strong vines, producing ripe grapes in perfect condition. Finally, depending on the vintage, the grapes must be harvested at the right moment and vinified correctly.

The soil here is similar to that of the red wine vineyard: a thick layer of Miocene marine molasses overlaid with alpine diluvium (formed by round pebbles - or "galets").

GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Roussanne

VINIFICATION
The grapes are harvested by hand and taken quickly to the winery in small baskets. A second hand sorting is done upon arrival to cull any unripe or damaged grapes. After a light pneumatic pressing, the must is allowed to clarify overnight.

Fermentation takes place 50% in barrels and 50% in stainless steel vats.

Following malolactic fermentation, maturation for eight months, with 50% in oak barrels and 50% in vats, prior to bottling.

TASTING NOTE
Lovely lifted nose on this, screaming stone fruit, honey apricot and white peaches, while still maintaining that almond blossom and hazelnut character. Very, very, very long, with a lovely refreshing acidity , which is no mean feat with Roussanne in a hot vintage. This is very, very, very good - or very excellent if I can have that!
