CHÂTEAU GRUAUD-LAROSE ST JULIEN 2004
This 2eme Cru can be one of St Julien's most structured and long lived wines. The blend is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon giving it an excellent and savoury structure. However, the 2004 is much softer and well integrated at this (youthful) stage and combines rich, plumy fruit with a green leaf and tobacco character. Quintessentially Claret!
VINEYARD
The estate of Château Gruaud-Larose estate stretches to 150 hectares of the St Julien appellation; 82 ha are planted to vines. The major blocks of vines are actually around the 19th Century Château itself; surrounded by the vineyards of Châteaux Branaire-Ducru and Lagrange.
The soil is deep Quaternary gravel and the vines average around 45 years of age, planted at a density of 10,000 vines/ha.
GRAPE VARIETIES
65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot.
VINIFICATION
The fruit, harvested by hand before being sorted and then undergoing a cold-soak prior to temperature controlled fermentation in a mixture of wooden and concrete vats. Pumping over is practiced twice-daily.
A third of the vintage then undergoes malolactic fermentation in oak barrels, before ageing the wine in
Alliers
and
Nevers
oak (up to 50% new) for 18 months. The wine is lightly fined and filtered before bottling.
TASTING NOTE
The nose of the wine exudes black fruits, blueberry and tobacco with a little bit of green leaf in the background to add interest. Unusually for youthful Gruaud-Larose, the tannins are well integrated into the plumy fruit. Medium-bodied, with soft, silky tannins and a medium finish. This wine is balanced and drinking well even at this stage in its development.
