CHATEAU BEAUCASTEL 2004 - CHATEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE
Chateau Beaucastel is, for many, the benchmark Chateauneuf-du-Pape. From 2004, an excellent vintage in CdP, this wine is intense and complex on the nose, with hints of leather, fur, black olives and spices. The palate is dense and supple, showing ripe dark fruit, velvety tannins and great structure.
VINEYARD
The estate covers a total of 130 hectares, of which only 100 hectares are planted to vines. Of this, only 3/4 is Châteauneuf-du-Pape AC. Every year one or two hectares of old vines are grubbed up and the equivalent area is replanted on land which has not had vines growing on it for at least ten years.
A Miocene era soil covered with an Alpine deposit (rolled river stones), brought in during the last Ice Age by water and glaciers; in fact the former riverbed of the Rhône.
The soil around Château de Beaucastel is quite homogenous, much of the land being covered by the classical CdP
galets
GRAPE VARIETIES
Beaucastel is almost unique in using all 13 of the permitted grape varieties in CdP: Mourvedre, Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Vacarese, Counoise, Terret Noir, Muscardin, Clairette, Picpoul, Picardan, Bourboulenc and Roussanne. (Phew!)
VINIFICATION
The grapes are hand-picked and rigourous selction is practiced. After total de-stemming, grapes go into fermentation vats where they undergo a traditional vinification.
Each grape variety is vinified separately. Once the fermentation is finished, the wine from each grape variety is carefully tasted and blended, the percentage of each variety changing each vintage.
The wine is then put into large oak barrels to age for twelve months.
TASTING NOTE
The wine has a dark ruby colour with purple tinges.
The elegant nose shows ripe cherries, spices and a hint of wild herbs.
The palate is round and finely textured, both fleshy and fresh. Fine balance between lovely ripe fruit and a delicate tannic structure.
Impressive balance between ripeness and freshness.
One of the most elegant vintages ever.
