CHARLES MELTON ROSE OF VIRGINIA 2011
This wine is firmly in the premier league of Australian Rosé wines and certainly counts as one of the more robust memebers of the team. The Rose of Virginia is a gorgeous wine, being filled with crushed strawberry and cocktail cherry flavours. These ripe fruit flavours are balanced by refreshing acidity and a pleasant dry finish - and it's a great colour too!
ONLY AVAILABLE IN AN UNSLPLIT CASE OF 12
VINEYARD
At Charles Melton Wines, great emphasis is placed on the quality of fruit. All grapes are dry grown and harvested from the winery's own 50 acres of prime Barossa vineyard land, as well as from a select group of grapegrowers.
Yields are extremely low with often only one tonne to the acre, and the vineyards are truly old with many exceeding 80 years.
GRAPE VARIETIES
55% Grenache, 21% Pinot Meunier, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Shiraz
VINIFICATION
The Rose of Virginia production involves a number of key techniques. Co-fermentation of the varieties gives a lovely pink colour, and a variation in skin contact times allows just the right combination of colour and tannin.
The slow, cool fermentation is stopped when just a few grams of natural grape sugar are left in the wine. This to soften rather than sweeten.
Picking slightly early helps retain the natural acidity. The wine is then bottled immediately to capture its youthful zest and fragrance.
The varieties were co-fermented as usual, with varying skin contact times which resulted in the right combination of colour and tannin.
The juice was left on the skins from 1 - 3 days, after which only the free run juice was drained off and used. The fermentation continued at low temperatures for some six weeks and was then stopped, with a very slight amount of natural grape sugar retained. Early bottling helped retain crispness and fruit freshness.
TASTING NOTE
Lovely vibrant crimson/magenta hue. Deep colour, less so than the 2010, but still good depth and biightness. Delicious young Grenche lift is evident with a little touch of sweet marzipan that seems unique to this vintage. On the palate, just the right amount of acidity, crisp flavours and fleshiness.
