CHARLES MELTON NINE POPES 2009 CHARLES MELTON NINE POPES 2009

The nine popes wine is based on the most famous Grenache blend Châteauneuf du Pape (nine popes geddit?). This is a super vintage of the wine, offering lovely perfume, a very smooth and round palate but with considerable vigour and weight too.

ONLY AVAILABLE IN AN UNSLPLIT CASE OF SIX

VINEYARD
The Grenache fruit in this blend comes principally from old dry grown bush vines, the Barossa being one of the last areas that contains such a rich resource.

The Shiraz and Mourvèdre are a mix of trellis grown and bush vines of similar age.

GRAPE VARIETIES
50% Shiraz, 46% Grenache, 4% Mourvèdre

VINIFICATION
Charlie Melton uses a range of different techniques in the Nine Popes, including whole bunch fermentation, along with de-stemmed but uncrushed fruit.

This vintage a higher percentage of new French oak was used to add complexity to the nose. Oak ageing was in mostly French barriques for 16-18 months before being blended and given a light filtration to bottling. No fining agents were used.

TASTING NOTE
The Grenache in the blend shows in the musky, strawberry perfumes on the nose and combines with the smoky, earthy spice from the Mourvèdre and Shiraz. Aniseed, sweet liquorice and cinnamon flavours on the palate give way to a long, spicy finish.
