The wine exemplifies Nicolás Catena's success and pioneering research with the Malbec grape in Mendoza. A classic Malbec displaying all the deep, dark and brooding fruit, but with a lovely violet perfume that is the signature of this variety. VINEYARD The Nicasia Vineyard is a small, specially selected number of rows in Lot 1 of the Catena family's Altamira Vineyard. Planted in 1996, the Malbec vines are on own roots and part of a massal population from the Catena family's historic, 80 year old Angelica vineyard. Early shoot removal in September and a cluster thinning on December 15 lead to an extremely low yield of 1.2 tons per acre (2.5 tons per hectare). With plantation density of 1,925 plants per acre (4,000 plants per hectare), this translates into a yield of 22 ounces (625 grams) per plant. GRAPE VARIETIES 100% Malbec VINIFICATION The wine was fermented in vertical 225 litre open barrels and small 500 litre tanks with manual punching down of the cap. The maximum temperature reached was 30° C with a 28 day maceration The wines then spent 18 months in 100% new French oak before being blended and bottled unfined and unfiltered. TASTING NOTE The 2007 Catena Zapata Nicasia Vineyard Malbec displays a saturated dark violet colour; aromas of black- and red currant, liquorice and spice. The wine has the texture of liquid velvet, then creamy and seamless in the mid-palate, with lovely violet lift to the flavours of dark berries, liquorice, bitter chocolate and spiced cake. A velvety, yet also grainy wine with lovely lift and energy.
