CATENA MALBEC 2009
This Malbec is a step up from the Alamos. The wine has excellent concentration, balance and freshness, showing lovely blackcurrant and cassis fruit with notes of earthiness and lovely sweet spice. This is a great example of the quality of wine coming out of Argentina at the moment and this wine offers great value for money.
VINEYARD
Again, the fruit for this wine was grown in 4 high-altitude vineyards in the foothills of the Andes:
Angelica vineyard, Lunlunta district, 2,850' elevation, lends ripe plum and chocolate flavours with a very soft, supple mouth-feel.
The La Pirámide vineyard, Agrelo district 3,100' elevation offers blackberry fruit with a slight earthy tone and notes of spicy black pepper.
The Altamira vineyard, Altamira district, 3,870' elevation, brings a core of blackcurrant and cassis, with excellent structure and length.
And the Adrianna vineyard, Gualtallary district, 5,000' elevation, vineyard lends exceptional concentration with explosive floral aromatics.
GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Malbec
VINIFICATION
The wine was fermented using cultured yeast at a maximum fermentation temperature of 29°C, for 11 days. 70% of the resulting wine was then matured for 12 months in French oak (20% of which is new) and the remaining 30% was matured for 12 months in new American oak. The wine was not fined and bottled without filtering.
TASTING NOTE
The 2009 Catena Malbec shows a dark violet colour with deep bluish-black tones. The nose offers ripe, concentrated dark fruit aromas with delicate floral notes and traces of mocha. The palate is rich and lush, with spices, tobacco and a touch of leather. The finish presents soft, supple tannins with bright, crisp acidity and a flinty minerality that gives the wine exceptional length.
