CATENA ALTA MALBEC 2004
Consistently rated as one of the finest Malbecs in Argentina and hence the world. This is the pinnacle of Catena's range and the 2004 Catena Alta Malbec offers deep colour, a huge, brooding palate of dark fruit and spice and a wonderful minerality and balancing acidity to keep the wine fresh and exciting.
VINEYARD
The Catena family has conducted extensive research into the soils and microclimates of Mendoza's high altitude wine country in the foothills of the Andes mountains. At different altitudes, the family's Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards express a unique profile of aromas and flavors: the black currant and cassis fruit flavors and ripe, sweet tannins of the La Pirámide vineyard (3,100' elevation); the spicy aromatics and pepper notes of the Domingo vineyard (3,700' elevation); the finely grained tannins of the Altamira vineyard (3,870' elevation); the minerality and notes of eucalyptus of the Adrianna vineyard (5,000'). The blend of these components creates a wine of unique character that has balance, concentration and a strong varietal identity.
The grapes for the Alta Malbec were sourced from four high altitude vineyards:
Lot 4 of
La Piramide
Vineyard, Agrelo district, 3,100' elevation
Lots 3 and 9 of
Adrianna
Vineyard, Gualtallary district, 4,550' elevation
Lot 18 of
Angélica
Vineyard, Lunlunta district, 2,850' elevation
Lot 1of
Altamira
Vineyard, Altamira district, 3,870' elevation
GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Malbec
VINIFICATION
The grapes were fermented at a maximum of 27oC for 16 days and allowed a 30 day maceration period to ensure extraction. The wine was then aged in 70% new French oak barrels for 18 months and then bottled without fining or filtering.
TASTING NOTE
The 2004 Catena Alta Malbec shows a deep, saturated violet colour with a blackish hue. The nose presents a wide array of dark berry fruits with notes of delicate violets flowers as well as sweet clove spices, a touch of cedar and leather. The wine is full bodied and unctuous, with excellent weight and supple texture. The mid palate offers rich cassis and black currant fruit flavours interwoven with hints of chocolate, vanilla and black pepper. The lengthy finish shows wonderful minerality, with finely grained tannins and lively acidity.
