CANTINA MESA GIUNCO 2010
Cantina Mesa is one of the most exciting new wineries to come out of Sardinia in two decades. The wine is a 100% Vermentino di Sardegna and has a beautiful tropical fruit nose and lively palate. This is a truly special wine coming from one of the most fashionable and exciting areas of Italy. A great wine!
VINEYARD
The grapes are grown in the Sulcis area on the south-western tip of Sardinia. The climate here is Mediterranean with low rainfall distributed sporadically throughout the year, but usually falling almost entirely in autumn and winter. Frequent north-westerly winds, high temperatures in spring and summer, a mild autumn with winters which vary from dry and cold through to relatively mild.
Soils are naturally sandy and chalky-clay, sub-alkaline, of a rocky, schistous character and medium textured, with moderate nutrient levels and good levels of minerals adding a distinctive character to the resulting wines.
The vines are trained using the espalier method and spur-cordon pruned with yields around 45 hl/ha.

VINIFICATION
The rain in 2010 was a welcome relief in Sardinia after two very hot, dry years. The climatic conditions were excellent, with just the right amount of rainfall and long, hot, sunny days in August until the white grapes were picked at the end of the month. Rain in September caused problems for the reds but the 2009 whites have lovely balance between ripe fruit and lively acidity.
The grapes were handpicked into shallow boxes, and fermented in stainless steel tanks, followed by a brief maturation in stainless steel tanks.
TASTING NOTE
Straw yellow in colour with good intensity on the nose, hints of tropical fruit, especially pineapple and mango and some floral notes. On the palate it has a good weight and concentration, fresh lively fruit and a long, dry finish.
