BODEGAS MONTEABELLÓN VERDEJO RUEDA 2009
From the small but growing DO south of Valladolid, this Rueda wine is one of Spain's most fashionable and modern whites. Made from the indigenous Verdejo grape, it shows a lovely floral and peachy character so typical of the grape. Bodegas Moneabellón is Issac Fernandez, nephew of the legendary Vega Sicilia winemake Mariano Garcia, so it's good pedigree too!
VINEYARD
The Rueda vineyards are sandwiched between the historical cities of Valladolid, Segovia and Avila.
The vineyards are in the central area of the depression formed by the river Duero, on a smooth plateau blown by Atlantic winds. The area has alluvial and flood terraces on the banks of the river Duero and its tributaries, Dark grey-brown soils, rich in calcium and magnesium, with good ventilation and draining, and limestone outcrops on the hilltops. Permeable and healthy, their texture varies from sandy-loamy to loamy.
GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Verdejo
VINIFICATION
Grapes are harvested when they are at just the right point of maturity, an important factor for winemaking. The mechanised grape harvesting process avoids the oxidation of the must, and a large part of the harvesting therefore takes place at night, with no sunlight to oxidise the must. The grapes enter the cellars at 10-15°C, as opposed to September's daytime temperatures of 24-28°C.
Fermentation takes place in stainless steel containers fitted with temperature control devices.
TASTING NOTE
It shows exuberant floral aromas, typical from the Verdejo varietal, and a distinct banana and exotic fruit character. The perfect acidity gives freshness and vigour to the wine and a finish that is long and expressive.
