Best's Great Western Old Vine Pinot Meunier 2011 Best's Great Western Old Vine Pinot Meunier 2011

The Best's Old Vine Pinot Meunier 2011 is the ultimate wine that speaks of place and it has a cult following, particularly in the wine community and the trade where people understand how rare this varietal planting is. I'm not aware of many other single varietal Pinot Meuniers and certainly not one of this quality. A truly unique wine and well worth trying as an alternative to Pinot Noir.

Best's Millers Burgundy vineyard, first planted in 1868, was made up of about 85 per cent Pinot Meunier and the rest was Pinot Noir.

In the early 1970s, 11 rows of 100 per cent Pinot Meunier were replanted next to the original vineyard.

2011 was a challenging season with several significant rain events in mid- summer. Flood conditions blocked supply roads early in the season.

100% Pinot Meunier

Vinification takes place in open stainless steel fermenters.

The wine is matured in a combination of one third new and one and two year old French and American oak (barriques and puncheons) for around 12 months.

Best's Great Western Old Vine Pinot Meunier 2011 is bright scarlet, with a pale scarlet hue. The nose has perfumed sappy, spicy, meaty aromatics that mingle with fresh red fruit aromas and hints of forest floor. This wine reveals more with time in the glass. The palate has juicy varietal flavours are balanced with a soft acidity and lingering velvety tannins.
