BALNAVES COONAWARRA CABERNET MERLOT 2002
Balnaves are recognised as one of the leading producers of Cabernet in Australia. This wine again is a benchmark example of its style showing a lovely blackcurrant fruit with a rich, fleshy character, but with an underlying structure of soft tannins.
VINEYARD
Balnaves' 35 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards are split up into sub blocks (some only 1 hectare in area), on the basis of soil type, clone variation, trellis type etc. This enables Balnaves to program different treatments for these smaller areas. Balnaves has the ability to apply supplementary water through a central computer to all the vineyard, but at least one third of the vineyard has not been watered for five years.
The vines are between 12 and 22 years old, and are trained on a single wire.
For this wine, Cabernet came from Balnaves' Dead Morris Vineyard (52%) and Walker Vineyard (35.3%), while Merlot was sourced from their Avery and Gumtree Blocks (12.7 %); the low percentage of Merlot reflecting the low yields.
GRAPE VARIETIES
90.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9.5% Merlot
VINIFICATION
Matured for 12 months in AP Johns Wilson American oak Hogsheads and Dargaud and Jaegle Les Bertranges Hogsheads, 88 % new and 12% second fill, this wine was egg white fined and bottled in February 2004.
TASTING NOTE
A lifted nose displaying, dark cassis fruit, dark chocolate and some leafy/ seaweed elements. Rich black fruit flavours dominate the palate with a big fleshy mouth-feel and strong tannin backbone finishing firm and textured.
