ATA RANGI PINOT NOIR 2008
This Ata Rangi Pinot Noir is consistently ranked as one of New Zealands best and is produced in Wairarapa - centred around the town of Martinborough, about one hour's drive North of Wellington. This wine displays vivid red fruits, fresh plum-stone and ripe black cherry notes along with silky tannins and the potential to show its "earthier" side, with some bottle age.
VINEYARD
The Ata Rangi vineyards are situated in Wairarapa, just north of Wellington. The grapes are planted on a thin layer of well-drained alluvial soil deposited on what was the original course of the river as it flowed east to the Pacific Ocean.
The grapes for this wine were grown on the Ata Rangi, Champ Ali, Di Mattina, and Cambrae vineyards. This premium Pinot is largely sourced from the oldest home blocks, now reaching 26 years of vine age. Abel (aka the Ata Rangi Clone) is predominant, but the Dijon selections and Clone 5 also play very important roles.
GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Pinot Noir
VINIFICATION
The grapes for this wine were harvested between March and April 2008. The grapes were subject to 5 to 8 days pre-fermentation maceration, 10% of the crop being kept as whole berries. The various clones and vineyards were kept separate during fermentation which reached a maximum temperature of 32oC. The wine then underwent complete malolactic fermentation in barrel and was then aged for 12 months in French oak, 25% of which was new.
TASTING NOTE
This wine displays vivid red fruits, fresh plum-stone and ripe black cherry notes. Dark chocolate and rose scents are followed by fine savoury threads which run through the palate. Taut and restrained when young, this vibrant pinot will in time reveal an earthier side, along with voluptuous fruit and silky tannins
