LES TERRASSES "VELLES VINYES" ALVARO PALACIOS PRIORATO DO 2007

Alvaro Palacios is famed for his legendary (and hugely expensive) Priorat wine L'Ermita which is made in tiny quantities and is sought after. Back down on earth, those of us of more modest means look for the type of quality that Palacios can bring at more affordable prices. Les Terrasses offers just that; a classic Priorat with all the rich black fruit character and a soft and appealing structure, but with enough there to help it last for 10+ years.

VINEYARD
The grapes for Les Terraces were sourced from the Palacios estate with the addition of selected lots of purchased Garnacha and Cariñena grapes from vines averaging 25-30 years of age (but some as old as 60).

Yields were kept low at ~25 hL/hA

The vineyards are at 250 to 600 metres above sea level with soils of friable Schist on steep, terraced slopes. Harvesting is done by hand.

GRAPE VARIETIES
60% Cariñena, 30% Garnacha, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah

VINIFICATION
The grapes are de-stemmed by machines and then undergo a cold maceration for 15 days. The must is then fermented in stainless steel with regular pumping over.

The resulting wine is matured in French oak barriques, 20% of which are new, before being fined with egg whites and bottled without filtration.

TASTING NOTE
This wine has a lovely bright red colour and vibrant black fruit on the nose, with some floral quality adding a level of complexity and zip. The palate exudes fresh blackberry and bramble flavours with a gentle acidity and soft, silky and spicy tannins on the finish.
