BODEGAS ALIÓN, RIBERA DEL DUERO 2005 BODEGAS ALIÓN, RIBERA DEL DUERO 2005

Bodegas Alión is again owned by the fabled Vega Sicilia, this time in Ribera Del Duero itself. Designed to be the "modern" sister of the great wine itself, this is a big and rather friendly beast. Full of black fruit and spice flavours that last and last, this gives you some insight into the great wine itself without the price tag! 94+ points from Robert Parker.

VINEYARD
The Alión vineyard parcels are found in different areas throughout Ribera del Duero, allowing the wine to reflect the rich expression of all the different soils in the region.

The soil itself is well drained , deep and continaing quartz gravel from the river Duero.

The Ribera del Duero area has a continental climate, with an Atlantic influence. Rainfall is scarce, with average annual levels below 500 mm, mainly concentrated in spring and autumn. Sunshine, extensive and abundant, reaches annual averages of 2,200 hours, and the River Duero favours morning mists and fogs, which offer an additional source of humidity.

This climate is highly conducive to grape production, helping to avoid fungi or insect induced diseases. The vineyards' worst enemies are the spring frosts and the hail storms in summer.

GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo)

VINIFICATION
The grapes were harvested from 20th to 26th September with dry and hot weather.

The wine was then fermented in some of the twenty French wooden vats of 15.000 kg capacity that fill the fermenting room. Every year, 5 of the tanks are renewed, therefore replacing all the tanks within a four year cycle.

The wine was then aged in 100% new French oak barrels every year. They work with 5 different French coopers to compound the characteristics of each of them in the final blend of Alión.

After aging in barrell, the wines are bottled and matured for a futher two years in the Bodegas' cellars before being released to the market.

TASTING NOTE
The wine is a bright cherry red with ruby undertones and has a nose of olives and undergrowth, violets and mulberry backed up by some dark cherry. The palate is well structured and balanced, showing juicy red and black fruits and with layers of herbs, earth and fruit.
