ALLEGRINI VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO 2006
Another Italian wine that is often made poorly and underrated as a result. Allegrini is a producer of great, classical Vaolpolicella showing attractive perfume, black cherries and a lively acidity, this is a really super example of this wine, for a great price.
VINEYARD
The south-east facing vineyards are located in the hills of the Valpolicella Classico region at 180-280 metres above sea level. The soil there is mostly cretaceous and calcareous. Pergola Trentina is the training system used with about 3000 vines per hectare, the average age of the vines is 28 years and the yield is 72 Hl/ha.
GRAPE VARIETIES
60% Corvina Veronese, 35% Rondinella, 5% Molinara
VINIFICATION
The grapes were hand picked during the first fortnight in October and then were de-stalked before crushing, after which fermentation occurred at 25-31ºC. Maceration lasted 7 days and malolactic fermentation took place in December. The wine was held in glass-lined cement tanks until bottling in mid-February.
TASTING NOTE
Bright, youthful cherry-red in colour, with open perfumes of ripe, slightly spiced cherries, the characteristic perfume of good young Valpolicella. On the palate the wine is medium-bodied, with sweet, ripe fruit flavours which bolster the juicy, fresh acidity and soft, rounded tannins.
