PODERI ALDO CONTERNO BAROLO 2004
Aldo Conterno is one of
the
finest producers of Barolo. This was a great year in Piemonte and it breaks the "drought" of 2002 and 2003 as the family declassified the grapes due to poor vintages. 2004 however is a superb year, with fine balance with perfect depth and structure and all the perfume you would expect from a great Barolo.
VINEYARD
Aldo Conterno's family has been producing great Piedmontese wines for more than five generations. Since setting up on his own after splitting with his brother Giovanni (who kept the Giacomo Conterno label), Aldo has been in the front rank of Piedmontese producers. He has been an innovator of great importance and the dynamism which engendered such innovation has been passed onto his sons, who now run the winery.
The Barolo is no longer
'Bussia'
as the vines from another of the Conterno vineyards from the commune of Barolo are now 25 years old so have been deemed worthy of inclusion in their Barolo. The new vineyard accounts for 15% of the blend, hence the change in name. The rest of the fruit still comes from one of the best vineyards on the Bussia Soprana hill.
Nebbiolo is always the last grape to be picked in Piemonte and in 2004, the Nebbiolo grapes for the Conterno Barolo were picked as late as mid November.
GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Nebbiolo
VINIFICATION
Temperature controlled fermentation took place in stainless steel tank with maximum temperatures of 32°C. Maceration on the skins and fermentation lasted 15 days. The wine remained in stainless steel for a further 4-5 months after which it was transferred to large Slovenian oak barrels where it remained for 25-28 months before bottling.
TASTING NOTE
Good depth of ruby/garnet colour, the 2004 is perfumed and approachable. On the nose, it has the classic Nebbiolo aromas of rose petals and a Pinot-like strawberry character. On the palate, the tannins are ripe and supple, providing a good backbone for the rounded, generous berry fruit. Long and elegant to the finish.
