ABADIA RETUERTA CUVEE PALOMAR 2003 ABADIA RETUERTA CUVEE PALOMAR 2003

This estate, just to the West of Ribera del Duero is producing some cracking wines; very modern with great colour, depth and richness. This wine, a blend of Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon gives a very fine, soft plumy fruit and a lovely ripe, smokiness.

VINEYARD
First planted in 1991, primarily on the northern, stonier and less fertile side of the Duero valley, the estate of Santa Maria de Retuerta covers 700 hectares, of which 204 are planted to vine.

The vines are planted along a range of slopes running down to the southern bank of the River Duero from a maximum height of 850 metres. The estate comprises 54 crus that are identified by the composition of the soil, orientation, grape variety and microclimate.

The Tempranillo used for this wine is grown on low-yielding chalky soils, in a north-facing vineyard whereas the Cabernet is grown at the lower end of the estate, on warm pebbly soils which help retain the heat needed for full ripeness.

GRAPE VARIETIES
50% Tempranillo, 50% Cabernet Sauvignon

VINIFICATION
The Tempranillo grapes were fermented at 15-18°C and the Cabernet at higher temperatures, reaching 26°C. Maceration lasted 35 days and the final blend was assembled in November. The wine was aged for 18 months in fine-grained, medium-toast French oak casks.

TASTING NOTE
The Cabernet Sauvignon adds extra depth and intensity to the strawberry fruit and fresh acidity of the Tempranillo. Judicious oak ageing tempers the Cabernet tannins, producing an attractive, approachable wine even in its youth. Nicely structured, with a long, elegant finish.
